Did You Know...

A blizzard sparked a hot idea.

Stuck at home for three days, Kathryn Cooper of Skiatook did quite a bit of cooking to avoid boredom. One of the snacks she fixed was Chex Party Mix, using her good buddy Stephen Barton’s seasoning recipe for chicken wings.

Her husband, Kelley, was over at Steve’s house, and she called to holler at him for a bit, telling Kelley to be sure to tell Steve she’d made “the best party mix EVER” using his seasoning. Steve said they ought to market it and sell it, Kathryn laughed and they hung up, going about their own blizzardy business.

But Steve knew he had a good thing on his hands – or, more importantly, in his spice rack. His recipe was the first one he’d come across to his liking that was a rub instead of the usual wing sauce. And those store-bought sauces lacked the kick he wanted.

Steve couldn’t market it by himself, though, so he called Kathryn back a couple hours later, and suggested they partner up and give this business thing a shot.

After some research, including a workshop at the Food and Agricultural Product Center at Oklahoma State University (not to mention some tasty tests), We Wing It took off – a spicy seasoning for meats, vegetables and, yes, the best dang party mix you’ll ever put in your mouth.

The pilots behind We Wing It have tried their product on other items, enhancing the flavor of chicken, pork, shrimp, eggs, even popcorn. “It’s good on just about everything we’ve tried to put it on,” Steve said. “It’s spicy without being too hot.”

Fantastic flavor aside, We Wing It is also all-natural, and it contains zero additives.

We Wing It is all about promoting local resources. From the product manufacturing, promotional items, banking and art, it’s all supplied by fellow Oklahomans – right down to the happy porker flying a red biplane with a scared chicken on one wing and a bug-eyed shrimp on the other.

It’s a product born from a fun friendship and love for tasty food – something your family will no doubt appreciate when you go to reach for your bottle of We Wing It next time you’re in the kitchen.
You can find We Wing It ($5) at the Made in Oklahoma store at 5529B E. 41st St., Tulsa or you can purchase from Barton or Cooper. You can contact them at getspiced@wewingit.com.
